The argument for a co-ord over a dress is that you get to break it up later. Worn together it reads as one line from the neck down, which is what makes it evening wear. Worn apart it is a halter top and a separate bottom half that each belong with other things.
Both pieces are cut on the bias so they move together rather than fighting each other at the waist, which is the usual failure of a two-piece. The halter neck carries the weight on the back of the neck and leaves the shoulders bare, and the cowl softens what would otherwise be a severe neckline by releasing extra fabric at the front to fall in folds.
The waist is elasticated. On a two-piece that is a practical decision as much as a comfortable one: it lets the top and the bottom meet at the same point on your body without either being pinned to a fixed measurement.
It shares a register with the Raya set and the Louise slip. More in Dresses.
