A shirt dress is a shirt that kept going, and the pleasure of this one is that it did not go very far. It is cut to a mini length and cut oversized, so the proportions are wrong in the way that reads as deliberate rather than borrowed.
The shirt details are all present and all functional: a collar that stands or opens depending on how many buttons you leave, a full placket down the front, and a hem that falls straight rather than being shaped to the waist. Because the body is oversized, the dress never settles against you. It hangs from the shoulders, which is what keeps a short length from feeling exposing.
How you wear it is mostly a question of what you do with the buttons. Closed to the throat it is severe. Open at the top and belted at the middle it becomes an entirely different dress, and the straight hem is what lets it take a belt without bunching.
It is the least formal thing in Dresses, and the easiest to wear in daylight.
